If you are experiencing really slow web browsing but downloads seem to be at normal speed, you may be a victim of a DNS (domain name service) cache poisoning attack.\u00a0\u00a0 This can affect any operating system connected to the Internet. Many of my professional clients have been impacted by this recently.\u00a0 It is becoming a common issue.\u00a0\u00a0 The simple test to see if you are being impacted is to download a file from a known source such as Microsoft or Apple.\u00a0 If the download proceeds normal speed, but web browsing is slow and sluggish, you may be affected.<\/p>\n
On windows based systems:<\/p>\n
Open a command prompt and type in “ipconfig\u00a0 \/flushdns” without the quotes.\u00a0 Press enter.\u00a0 To prevent future issues you can disable the DNS client service in the Admin Tools–> Services section.<\/p>\n
On Mac systems:<\/p>\n
Leopard and newer<\/p>\n
Open a bsh shell prompt and type in “dnscacheutil -flushdns” without the quotes.<\/p>\n
Earlier than 10.5.2<\/p>\n
Open a bsh shell prompt and type in “lookupd -flushcache” without the quotes.<\/p>\n
On Nix systems:<\/p>\n
From a console with root priveledges “\/etc\/init.d\/nscd.restart” without the quotes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 G\/K\/Ubuntu users\u00a0 “su \/etc\/init.d\/nscd.restart” without the quotes.<\/p>\n
Most security programs have no mechanism to prevent this from occurring.\u00a0 I do recommend ESET’s Smart Security Suite for Windows.\u00a0 It will prevent this issue.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
