{"id":49,"date":"2009-02-13T21:44:19","date_gmt":"2009-02-14T05:44:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/69.231.151.61\/blog\/?p=49"},"modified":"2009-02-13T21:44:19","modified_gmt":"2009-02-14T05:44:19","slug":"processors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.evanscomputers.com\/index.php\/2009\/02\/13\/processors\/","title":{"rendered":"Processors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I frequently get asked which processor is best.<\/p>\n<p>There is no quick and easy answer to that question.\u00a0 Factors such as budget, what you plan to use the computer for,\u00a0 overall performance, existing system, all play a part.\u00a0 If you only browse the web and check email, you would be ill advised to purchase a $1600 Quad core Extreme edition i7 processor.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are a\u00a0 serious gamer, you would be very disappointed with any laptop as your main computer.\u00a0 I will attempt to give some suggestions for various scenarios here.<\/p>\n<p>Average user &#8211; you spend less than two hours a day on your computer, you check email, you browse the web.\u00a0 You play card games.\u00a0 You probably already have a system that is adequate for your basic needs.\u00a0 You may be best off to upgrade your existing system with more RAM.\u00a0 For Windows XP Home or Pro, 2 gigabytes of RAM is the &#8220;sweet spot&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0 If you have to get a new system, a standard laptop or desktop with an AMD or Intel processor and 2 gigabytes of RAM with Windows XP or Windows Vista may be totally adequate.<\/p>\n<p>Gamer &#8211; you know who you are.\u00a0 If you know the difference between card games and DirectX, you&#8217;re in this category.\u00a0\u00a0 A gaming laptop is an oxymoron.\u00a0\u00a0 You need a desktop system with 4 gigabytes+.\u00a0 If DirectX 10\u00a0 is something you care about Vista is your only choice.\u00a0 I suggest an Intel Core 2 Duo processor such as the E8400 or E8500.\u00a0 Take the money you saved on the processor and spend it on better Video cards.<\/p>\n<p>Hardcore Gamer &#8211; You play DirectX games 2 hours or more a day.\u00a0 Budget becomes the primary factor.\u00a0 Spend more on your Video cards than on your processor.\u00a0 Intel Core 2 Duo is still a very viable solution. E8500 is king\u00a0 of the hill.\u00a0 Why not go Quad?\u00a0 Quad processors are not fully utilized in any gaming scenario.\u00a0 Real world performance metrics indicate a 5-10% gain for a 50-75% increase in processor cost.\u00a0 An E8500 processor outperforms EVERY AMD processor and most of Intel&#8217;s Quad core processors.\u00a0 Exceptions are the Extreme Quads and the i7 processors.<\/p>\n<p>CAD\/CAM &#8211; If AutoCad is your thing, then a Quad core processor actually makes sense economically and from a time perspective.\u00a0 AutoCad and programs of this genre typically take full advantage of Quad Core processing.\u00a0\u00a0 I suggest the Intel i7 series, that fit within your budget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I frequently get asked which processor is best.
